MCAs Walk Out in Protest, Reject Ruto’s Absence at Key Summit!

During the 5th Legislative Summit convened by the County Assemblies Forum on March 17, Members of the County Assembly (MCAs) staged a walkout in protest against Sports Cabinet Secretary Salim Mvurya’s speech.

Mvurya, who was delivering remarks on behalf of President William Ruto, was interrupted as the MCAs voiced their frustration, chanting demands for Ruto’s direct involvement. Their repeated slogan, “No Ruto, No Summit,” forced organizers to pause proceedings in an attempt to defuse the situation.

The summit was designed to assess strategies for strengthening county assemblies and advancing devolution. Key discussions centered on fostering collaboration between county and national governments, advocating for increased county funding, and implementing policies to improve county governance.

Many MCAs expressed disappointment over the President’s absence, perceiving it as a sign of neglect by the national government. Their main concerns included inadequate financial support for counties, delays in fund disbursement, and excessive central government interference.

Footage obtained by wamuzinews.co.ke showed MCAs standing their ground, refusing to back down despite efforts to appease them. They emphasized the crucial role counties play in the devolution process and insisted they should not be sidelined.

This protest is part of ongoing dissatisfaction among MCAs, who have for months called for greater financial independence and better working conditions. The County Assemblies Forum (CAF) organized the summit to promote dialogue between county leaders and the national administration.

Meanwhile, on the same day, President Ruto attended multiple engagements, including a meeting at the African Development Bank hosted at the State House.
