A storm of controversy has erupted in Trans Nzoia as Governor George Natembeya faces mounting accusations of financial mismanagement tied to a staggering Ksh9.4 million withdrawal from Kitale Referral Hospital’s funds.
Explosive findings from the Auditor General’s report on the hospital’s 2023/2024 financial records have raised serious red flags, exposing a troubling lack of accountability in county spending. Shockingly, the audit uncovered missing documentation from previous fiscal years, making it nearly impossible to trace how public funds were handled.
One of the most damning revelations? The mysterious withdrawal of Ksh9.4 million—allegedly used to fund Trans Nzoia’s participation in the 2023 Devolution Conference. To make matters worse, the hospital’s board never approved the transaction, fueling concerns of blatant misuse of healthcare funds.
Outraged senators are demanding answers, with Vihiga Senator Godfrey Osotsi leading the charge. “This is a failure of leadership! Public money cannot be spent without proper records!” he declared in a fiery statement on April 2.

Governor Natembeya admitted to the unauthorized withdrawal but defended it as a “necessary borrowing” due to a lack of allocated funds for the conference. However, Trans Nzoia Senator Allan Chesang wasn’t convinced, blasting the administration for its failure to maintain essential financial records.
“Missing cashbooks, no trial balance, and no inventory records? This isn’t just negligence—it’s a governance disaster,” Chesang fumed.
Adding fuel to the fire, Elgeyo Marakwet Senator William Kisang has called on the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) to launch an immediate probe, warning that millions in public funds may have been siphoned away.
With pressure mounting, the Senate Committee has given Natembeya’s administration just one week to produce all missing financial documents, including certified bank statements and a full breakdown of the discrepancies.
Will the governor survive this political firestorm, or is this the beginning of a deeper corruption exposé? Stay tuned as the scandal unfolds!
