Kenyan Woman Makes History as Northern Ireland’s First Black Mayor

Lilian Seenoi-Barr, a Kenyan-born refugee, has been inaugurated as the first Black mayor of Derry City and Strabane District in Northern Ireland. Her appointment on June 3, 2024, marks a historic milestone for both the city and the island of Ireland.

Originally from Mau Narok in Nakuru County, Kenya, Seenoi-Barr arrived in Northern Ireland 14 years ago seeking asylum. With a background in social work and community development, she has been a staunch advocate for human rights and social justice. In 2012, she founded the North West Migrants Forum, an organization dedicated to supporting migrants and refugees in the region. Her work has been instrumental in promoting integration and understanding among diverse communities.

Seenoi-Barr was first elected to the Derry City and Strabane District Council in 2021, representing the Foyleside area. Her election as mayor was a significant achievement, reflecting her dedication to public service and her commitment to fostering a more inclusive society.

During her inauguration, Seenoi-Barr emphasized her mission to serve all residents of Derry and Strabane. She expressed her intention to focus on attracting investment, supporting youth employment, and advocating for affordable housing. Despite facing challenges, including racist abuse and threats from far-right activists, she remains steadfast in her commitment to unity and progress.

Her election has been met with widespread acclaim, with many viewing it as a testament to the evolving diversity and inclusivity of Northern Ireland. Seenoi-Barr’s journey from a refugee to the first Black mayor in the region serves as an inspiring example of resilience and dedication to public service.

As she embarks on her mayoral term, Seenoi-Barr continues to be a beacon of hope and a powerful advocate for marginalized communities, striving to make Derry and Strabane a more inclusive and prosperous place for all.
