In a stunning move, Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has officially declared Monday, March 31, 2025, a national holiday in honor of Idd-ul-Fitr, marking the grand conclusion of Ramadan.
The unexpected announcement, made through a special Gazette Notice on Friday, March 28, calls for a nationwide pause as Kenya joins the Muslim community in celebrating the end of the sacred fasting month.
“For public awareness, under the powers granted by Section 2(1) of the Public Holidays Act, Monday, March 31, will be observed as a public holiday for Idd-ul-Fitr,” the notice reads.
This declaration means that government offices, schools, banks, and various institutions will shut down for the day as the nation acknowledges this religious festivity.

Ramadan, which commenced on the evening of Friday, February 28, and stretched until Saturday, March 29, saw millions of Muslims worldwide engaging in fasting, prayer, and deep spiritual reflection.
President William Ruto, in his Ramadan message at the beginning of the fasting period, urged Muslims to use the season for introspection and devotion.
“This is an opportunity to strengthen your faith and recommit to doing what is right,” he emphasized.
Recognizing the vital role of the Muslim community in Kenya, the president also authorized duty-free importation of dates for Ramadan. This came shortly after he hosted an exclusive Iftar dinner at the State House, where he urged religious leaders to champion peace and unity in the nation.
With this unexpected holiday now in place, Kenyans are set for an extended weekend as the country honors Idd-ul-Fitr in a rare nationwide celebration!
