Martha Karua disclosed that the late Raila Odinga, during their last talk before he died, expressed his unhappiness with his political link with President William Ruto.
The leader of the People’s Liberation Party stated that the criticism was made during what eventually became their last contact before Raila’s death on October 15, 2025.Karua narrates that she talked to Raila in the first week of July when she was on a foreign trip, and the opposition giant admitted that he was not too comfortable with the backing of the all-inclusive government plan.
She remembered that she had inquired if he was worried about still working with a government that he personally called “the one that kills its own people,” and she even suggested he might pull the support. According to her, Raila’s answer was a concession of his difficulty, but he did not make a quick decision before leaving for treatment, during which time he became sick and eventually died.
The disclosure provides additional information to the already existing discussions going on in the political circles regarding the consequences of Raila’s partnership with the Ruto government, which was a step that attracted mixed reactions from an already divided base of supporters and critics.
Karua, who was the one who made the claim during a live interview, stated that she never tried to force Raila into giving an answer; however, she stressed that his discomfort was very much evident in their conversation.
Karua also reminisced about her reaction to the news of Raila’s death, telling the tale of how she verified the news and promptly put out a public statement of condolence. She told how she tried to be a comfort to his family and pay her last respects; she spoke of Raila’s lifelong involvement in political and social reforms in the country as a positive aspect of his legacy while, at the same time, acknowledging the human side of him as the imperfection of his legacy.
The statements are made at the same time as the discussion of the future of the opposition politics in Kenya is getting more intense, particularly because the country is to hold elections next
