Governor Natembeya in Hot Seat Over Sh3M Scandal.

A high-stakes courtroom showdown has erupted in Trans Nzoia County as Governor George Natembeya finds himself at the center of explosive corruption allegations involving millions in questionable county deals.

In a dramatic turn of events on Tuesday, Governor Natembeya appeared before Chief Magistrate Peter Ondieki to respond to serious accusations tied to financial impropriety and abuse of public office. The claims? That he pocketed over Sh3.25 million through under-the-table dealings with companies contracted by the county government between January 2023 and April 2025.

According to prosecutors, Natembeya allegedly reaped Sh1,127,900 from Mercy Chelangat—director of Lyma Agro Science Ltd and owner of Maira Stores—two entities that reportedly did business with the county. The second damning count involves a staggering Sh2,124,668 funneled from Emmanuel Wafula Masungo, the behind-the-scenes owner of Easterly Winds Ltd, another county contractor.

The Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) is now pushing to have the embattled governor denied bond, arguing that his deep-rooted influence in the region could intimidate witnesses and derail the course of justice. The prosecution cited disturbing reports that Natembeya’s supporters allegedly harassed EACC and DCI officers and even vandalized an official vehicle—evidence of which has reportedly been submitted to Kitale police station.

The courtroom buzzed with tension as a heavy-hitting defense team, including lawyers Ndegwa Njiru, Willis Otieno, George Wajakoyah, and Eugene Wamalwa, came out swinging. They claimed the case reeked of political witch-hunting and insisted their client was being unfairly targeted for his rising political clout.

Natembeya’s legal troubles come after months of intensive investigations into irregular procurement deals within the county. The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) pounced this week, arresting the governor on Monday and slapping him with charges of corruption, abuse of office, and bribery.

As Trans Nzoia watches in disbelief, the case raises serious questions about the integrity of county leadership in Kenya. Is this the fall of a once-celebrated reformist, or just another chapter in Kenya’s messy political wars?
