Gachagua Sounds Alarm Over 2027 Elections, Warns IEBC Nominees and Praises ‘Unstoppable’ Gen Z.

In a fiery interview that has sent shockwaves through the political landscape, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has issued a stern warning to the newly proposed IEBC nominees ahead of the 2027 General Election.

Speaking from his Wamunyoro home during an exclusive session on Obina TV, Gachagua didn’t mince words.

“If Parliament clears them, those nominees must remain loyal to Kenya not to power, not to politicians,” he said, his tone sharp and unwavering. “They must uphold the Constitution and avoid imposing anything on Kenyans. It will backfire. The people won’t take it lying down.”

His dramatic remarks come just ten days before the National Assembly begins vetting President William Ruto’s proposed picks for the reconstituted Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), scheduled for May 26, 2025.

Among the high-profile names nominated: Erastus Edung Ethekon for chairperson, alongside Anne Nderitu, Moses Mukwana, Mary Karen Sorobit, Hassan Noor, Francis Odhiambo, and Fahima Abdalla as commissioners.

Speaker Moses Wetang’ula has already tabled the list before the Justice and Legal Affairs Committee and opened the floor for public scrutiny.

Despite his fierce tone, Gachagua insisted he has “no problem” with the nominees. But he was quick to underline that the power to elect leaders lies solely in the hands of voters not IEBC.

“The Supreme Court ruled in 2013 that once Kenyans vote, the matter is settled. It’s the will of the people that prevails,” he said.

However, behind the scenes, legal storms are brewing. Several petitions have already been filed in court seeking to block some nominees, citing concerns over political bias and lack of neutrality.

Gachagua also turned heads with bold praise for Kenya’s Gen Z, calling them a game-changer in the political arena.

“This Gen Z crew deadly!” he exclaimed. “They’re not tribal, they can’t be bribed with 200 shillings, and they’re mobilizing. I’ve seen them collecting ID cards and preparing to register en masse as voters. That wave is real.”

With a burning desire to consolidate the Mount Kenya vote, Gachagua is now betting on his newly-launched Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) to challenge Ruto head-on in the looming electoral war.

As political temperatures rise, one thing is clear: the 2027 race is shaping up to be unlike anything Kenya has seen before.
