Gachagua Exits UDA, Eyes 2027 Presidential Seat

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has officially severed ties with the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) and announced plans to launch a new political party ahead of the 2027 general elections.

This move follows his impeachment in 2024, which he claims led to the departure of over five million voters from the Mt. Kenya region.

Gachagua criticized President William Ruto’s leadership, accusing him of betraying the Mt. Kenya community. He emphasized that the new party, set to be unveiled in May 2025, would not bear the UDA’s yellow color or wheelbarrow symbol, signaling a complete break from his former party.

In preparation for the 2027 elections, Gachagua has been engaging with political leaders from various regions, including Ukambani, Kisii, Western Kenya, and Samburu, to build a broad-based coalition. He also plans to appoint a Gen Z leader as his deputy party leader to ensure youth involvement in the new political vehicle.

Gachagua has warned Mt. Kenya leaders who continue to support President Ruto that they will face political consequences, stating that the region will vote out those who prioritize personal interests over the community’s welfare.

As the political landscape shifts, Gachagua’s new party aims to consolidate the Mt. Kenya vote and challenge President Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027. The upcoming launch in May 2025 will be a significant development to watch in Kenya’s political scene.
