Gachagua Condemns Abductions, Demands Action

Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has strongly criticized the recent abductions of government critics, labeling them as desperate actions by President William Ruto to stifle opposition amid growing dissatisfaction over economic management and questions about his legitimacy.

Speaking at the 6th Edition of the Malala Super Cup Tournament in Kakamega County, Gachagua stated that President Ruto should prioritize pressing issues like the economy, healthcare, and education, rather than using state power to silence critics. The event took place at the rural home of former UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala in Makunga village.

“We are witnessing a government that has lost public support and is resorting to desperate measures. A police officer used tear gas against us, but the meeting continued, and the attendees handled the disruptions. The public has chosen not to tolerate such interruptions,” Gachagua remarked.

He continued, “These actions are a reflection of desperation, with no real solutions for the people of Kenya. There are unresolved issues such as abductions, economic mismanagement, and the rising cost of living. Instead of addressing these problems, they try to disrupt our gatherings. These actions only fuel public anger and dissent.”

Gachagua argued that the current government has lost its credibility and legitimacy. He urged leaders to avoid making contradictory statements and address the growing number of abductions in Kenya.

“You can’t trust the government’s statements. President Ruto has repeatedly denied the abductions, only to later claim he will stop them. The question remains: who is responsible for these acts? These contradictions weaken public trust. The government was involved in my recent assault, orchestrated by a police officer. Desperate actions like these won’t bring about change,” he said.

He called on the government to release four young men allegedly abducted by police officers, stressing the need for action over empty promises.

“We want these young men to spend the New Year with their families. President, you promised to end abductions, yet these young men are still missing. We demand their release. Addressing the people’s grievances is essential for good governance,” Gachagua added.

He also praised Generation Z for their activism, urging them to continue holding the government accountable and to focus on voter registration for the upcoming 2027 elections.

“I commend Gen Z for their efforts, but they must move beyond social media and focus on increasing voter registration to address our political challenges. I will support them if they are wrongly accused by the president. I’m here to offer guidance if needed,” he affirmed.

Former UDA Secretary-General Cleophas Malala announced his shift to the opposition and gave the government a 72-hour deadline to release the four abducted youths.

“You cannot govern through fear and intimidation. We reject this,” Malala declared. “We demand the release of these four young men within 72 hours. If this doesn’t happen, we will launch nationwide protests. The entire nation will stand in solidarity if necessary,” he warned.

DAP-K leader Eugene Wamalwa echoed these sentiments, vowing to organize protests starting January 1 if the abductions continue.
