EPRA Shuts Down Petrol Stations

EPRA has shut down six petrol stations for violating fuel quality regulations, according to a notice issued by the authority. Among the offenders were Davis Filling Station in Machanga, Embu County, and Midtown Filling Station in Kithyoko, Machakos County, both found selling diesel meant for export.

In Machakos County, Stanken Filling Station was closed after denying officers access to sample and test its fuel. Elgon View Filling Station in Busia faced closure for selling contaminated kerosene and export diesel. Salama Filling Station in Kiambu and Imperial Service Station in Siaya were also shut down for offering diesel meant for export.

The crackdown occurred between October and December 2024, during which EPRA conducted 5,970 tests at 1,295 petroleum sites. Of these, 1,284 sites (99.15%) were compliant, while 11 (0.85%) were found non-compliant. Four of the non-compliant stations have since reopened after upgrading their products and paying penalties.

This comes after a similar operation between July and September 2024, when EPRA closed 14 stations and fined three others for selling adulterated fuel. During that period, 5,854 tests were conducted at 1,321 sites, with 1,304 (98.71%) deemed compliant.

EPRA reiterated its commitment to ensuring the quality of petroleum products across the country through continuous monitoring of fuel in sale, transport, and storage. The authority emphasized its dedication to upholding compliance and protecting consumers from substandard fuel products.

These efforts reflect EPRA’s resolve to combat fuel adulteration and illegal practices, which undermine the petroleum industry and pose risks to consumers and the environment.
