Four Coast Guard officers were rescued after their boat capsized in Lake Victoria. They were returning to Kisumu from covering President William Ruto’s event at Mageta Island.
Kenya Maritime Authority Engineer Director General Martin Munga confirmed that there were no fatalities. The officers are recovering in the hospital.
The officers were reported missing on Friday night. The search team made contact with them around 1 am. They were floating on the water with their life safety jackets on.
The incident highlights the importance of the recently launched Lake Victoria Maritime Rescue Coordination Centre in Kisumu. It facilitated the successful rescue operation.
The officers’ safety was ensured by the search and rescue efforts conducted throughout the night. Kenya Maritime Authority Engineer Director General Martin Munga expressed relief that the officers were found.
