CCTV Footage Exposes New Timeline in Cyrus Jirongo Fatal Crash, Bus Driver Re-Summoned

Investigators from the Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI) have delivered a significant update in the probe into the fatal road crash that claimed the life of former Cabinet minister and Lugari MP Cyrus Jirongo, unveiling detailed CCTV footage analysis that challenges earlier accounts and prompting authorities to re-summon the driver of the bus involved for further questioning.

The development marks a dramatic twist in one of Kenya’s most closely watched accident investigations. In an official statement dated December 16, 2025, the DCI confirmed that the driver of the Climax Company Ltd bus, Tyrus Githinji Kamau, will be required to report to the Naivasha Traffic Base on December 22 for additional police action after preliminary interviews and forensic reviews.

Kamau, originally released on cash bail while facing charges of dangerous driving resulting in death, had provided an initial account during earlier questioning. The new sequencing of events comes after homicide detectives and forensic teams secured and examined CCTV footage from Eagle Petrol Station, located near the crash site along the Nairobi–Nakuru Highway at Karai.

According to the forensic analysis, the footage places Jirongo’s movements on a precise timeline and paints a clearer — and more troubling — picture of the moments leading to the collision. The CCTV chronology shows that at 2:18:40 a.m., Jirongo’s vehicle entered the petrol station from the Nairobi direction but did not stop to refuel.

Within seconds — at 2:19:10 a.m. — he is seen stopping at the station exit. Just nine seconds later, at 2:19:19 a.m., Jirongo is observed turning sharply back toward the main highway. Six seconds after that turn, at 2:19:25 a.m., the CCTV captures a head-on collision with the PSV bus driven by Kamau.

The force of the impact was so immense that Jirongo’s vehicle was pushed approximately 25 metres from the point of collision, while the bus came to rest roughly 50 metres away, according to investigators. These new spatial details are now central to the DCI’s strategy to piece together vehicle trajectories, reaction times, and possible contributing factors such as speed and road conditions.

Detectives have also completed interviews with both the petrol station night guard and the fuel attendant, who were on duty that night and have presented their personal accounts of Jirongo’s actions at the station.

These witness statements are being evaluated alongside the CCTV material to determine whether discrepancies exist in earlier versions of events. In addition to examining visual evidence, the DCI forensic team has recovered key exhibits from the crash scene, and analysts are working to reconstruct the sequence with precision, including correlating CCTV data with testimonies from passengers aboard the bus.

The comprehensive review aims to clarify critical questions, including why Jirongo appeared to enter and exit the petrol station without stopping and what, if any, external factors influenced the timing of the collision.

The renewed summons for Kamau underscores the intensity of the inquiry and the possibility that further clarifications from the bus driver could provide insight into whether the collision was purely accidental or if errors in judgment or external pressures contributed to the tragedy.

The charge Kamau faces — dangerous driving causing death — carries significant legal implications. Authorities are also retracing Jirongo’s movements earlier that night, including statements from individuals present at a meeting he attended at Karen Oasis Bar and Restaurant in Nairobi.

Investigators intend to understand the full context of his itinerary before the fatal journey, which has intensified public curiosity and speculation. The DCI’s announcement arrives amid family and political calls for transparency, with some associates arguing that official accounts must be subjected to independent scrutiny to quell lingering doubts about the circumstances of Jirongo’s death.

Calls for a thorough and impartial investigation have echoed from civic groups and Jirongo’s United Democratic Party, which earlier demanded a probe beyond standard accident reporting.
