The Competition Authority of Kenya (CAK) has executed a series of unprecedented dawn raids on six major mattress manufacturers, which resulted in the discovery of what investigators call the “Comfort Cartel” that operated throughout the nation to control sleeping product prices.
The CAK enforcement officers conducted their coordinated strike operation against the main production plants and corporate offices of the top bedding companies in the country, which took industry executives by surprise.
The mission required the team to take encrypted messages and financial records and digital servers, which allegedly stored evidence of a hidden price-fixing operation that made millions of Kenyan households defenseless.
The economic sabotage “twisted” reality exists because the betrayal contains personal elements. The mattress manufacturers allegedly held secret meetings to maintain artificially high prices for basic mattresses while millions of Kenyans faced severe cost-of-living challenges.
The cartel created a marketing strategy to protect their business operations through market domination, which enabled them to charge high prices for essential household items, which included basic sleeping facilities.
A source close to the investigation explained that “this wasn’t just business; it was a siege on the Kenyan bedroom.” The raids emerged after investigators gathered intelligence for months about six companies that operated dominant market power, which they used to raise prices at school opening dates and holiday times when bedding products experienced peak demand.
The CAK confirmed that police confiscated evidence that shows “hard-core” anti-competitive activities that included market division and production restrictions. The companies face fines, which will reach 10% of their total yearly revenue if they are found guilty of the charges against them.
