CA Blocks Live Broadcast of June 25 Protests in a Major Media Clampdown.

In a dramatic escalation today, the Communications Authority of Kenya (CA) issued an unprecedented directive forcing all television and radio stations to cease live coverage of the nationwide Gen‑Z protests commemorating the deadly June 2024 demonstrations.

Regulator cites constitutional and legal grounds
CA Director General David Mugonyi issued a notice stating that “live coverage of the June 25th, 2025 demonstrations is contrary to Articles 33(2) and 34(1) of the Constitution of Kenya and Section 461 of the Kenya Information and Communications Act, 1998.” Broadcasters were ordered to comply immediately or face regulatory sanctions.

Media and civil society condemn censorship
Newsrooms across the country responded with alarm as the directive went into effect at 1:10pm. Critics argue the move amounts to a severe infringement on press freedom and public access to information during a moment of national significance. Civil society groups warn the measure could escalate tensions.

Broader crackdown as protests unfold
The blackout accompanies sweeping security measures: razor wire barricades ring Nairobi’s CBD and official buildings. Similar protest actions are unfolding in Mombasa, Nakuru, Kisii, and Kisumu. Protesters are demanding justice for victims of police brutality and unresolved cases—including the death of blogger Albert Ojwang and the shooting of a 22-year-old vendor in recent weeks.

Potential penalties loom over broadcasters
Although the CA did not specify the nature of penalties, it warned broadcasters “failure to comply will result in regulatory action.” Media observers anticipate fines, license suspensions, or internal disciplinary processes.

Tensions intensify around information control
Today’s unprecedented media clampdown mirrors past attempts to suppress real-time protest coverage—the CA previously cautioned outlets during the 2024 anti-tax protests. This move reflects the government’s determination to control the narrative around the Gen‑Z protests, but it is likely to fuel public distrust.

What’s next:

  • Will media houses defy the directive and risk stiff penalties?
  • How will citizens get live information once trusted broadcasts are silenced?
  • Could information suppression inflame tensions and spark wider unrest?

Stay with us as we bring you the latest updates on regulatory responses, protest development, and potential legal challenges in this high-stakes media showdown.
