A significative road accident happened to Buuri Member of Parliament Mugambi Rindikiri on the morning of Thursday along the Nanyuki–Meru highway, which is a very busy road. His trip was to a very important national event in Meru County and that is why the accident raised alarm in political and public circles.
Preliminary reports that come from police and eyewitnesses say that the member of parliament and all other people in the car got injuries which were not severe but the incident has kicked up the issue of road safety on roads that are among the major ones in Kenya.
The accident was in the Siraji area of Timau, where the car of Rindikiri crashed with another one that was said to be occupied by Catholic sisters. The front part of both cars got damaged a lot, but one of the first responders’ evaluations did not rule out the possibility of Rindikiri and the other car’s occupants having major as well as non-life threatening injuries.
Rindikiri had a trip planned to Kinoru stadium in Meru for President William Ruto’s NYOTA programme in which start-up capital is dispensed. The NYOTA programme is the flagship initiative that aims at empowering the youth in the region through offering them funds. Even with the accident, the event still took place with President Ruto and Deputy President Kithure Kindiki present as it was scheduled.
In a social media post after the mishap, the MP told about his feeling of relief as well as gratitude. He assured Kenyans that the accident victims were “safe and doing well.” He expressed thanks to constituents and the public for their expressed concern and said he was going to carry on with his duties after the medical examination.
The police are currently looking for the exact cause of the accident that occurred on one of the most frequented rural highways in the country. The authorities sent traffic control teams and emergency personnel to the site in order to secure the area, manage the traffic and help the other road users pass safely after the crash.
The accident brings to light the very same safety concerns that are still being raised about highways in Kenya, where road traffic accidents are still the leading cause of injury and death, especially on long stretches of road like the Nanyuki–Meru corridor that connects large towns and counties. The experts have been sounding the alarm repeatedly for the strengthening of traffic law adherence and better road quality as the only effective means of cutting down on such types of accidents.
While the investigations are on-going, the focus is still laid upon ascertaining whether the road conditions, driver actions or mechanical factors were the cause of the accident and also making sure the MP and all other involved persons get the necessary medical treatment and psychological support.
