BREAKING: UoN Council Members Arrested in Shocking Corruption Scandal

In an unprecedented turn of events, three senior members of the University of Nairobi (UoN) Council have been arrested by the Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) over allegations of gross abuse of office. The arrests, which occurred on May 16, 2025, have sent shockwaves through the academic and political spheres.

The detained officials include:

Prof. Amukowa Anangwe – Council ChairpersonDr. Ahmed Sheikh Abdullahi – Council MemberCarren Kerubo Omwenga – Council Member

The EACC has confirmed that the arrests are linked to the controversial appointment of Daniel Brian Ouma as Acting Chief Operations Officer, a decision allegedly made in violation of a court order issued in April 2024. The commission is also investigating other serious allegations, including the misappropriation of public funds and irregular procurement practices within the university.

The arrests come amid a backdrop of escalating tensions at UoN, where governance issues have been a subject of intense scrutiny. In April, Education Cabinet Secretary Julius Ogamba revoked the appointments of four council members, citing concerns over governance. However, a court later reinstated the council members, highlighting the complex legal and administrative challenges facing the institution.

The EACC’s investigation is part of a broader crackdown on corruption in public universities, with the commission probing multiple institutions over similar allegations.

As the legal proceedings unfold, the University of Nairobi faces a period of uncertainty and potential upheaval. The institution’s leadership crisis has raised questions about the effectiveness of governance structures in Kenya’s public universities and the need for comprehensive reforms to restore integrity and public trust.
