Kenya is reeling after a highly coordinated and brutal assault by suspected Al Shabaab terrorists left five elite Special Operations Unit (SOU) officers dead deep inside the treacherous Boni Forest in Lamu County.
The Wednesday evening horror unfolded during what was supposed to be a tactical operation. The officers, tracking suspected militants over a two-day mission, were instead met with a deadly ambush that turned the forest into a war zone.
Five other officers were critically injured, suffering devastating wounds in the firefight. The wounded were airlifted under tight security to Nairobi for emergency treatment, as shockwaves from the ambush rocked the security establishment.
Sources say the special unit was hot on the heels of a terror cell believed to be planning a massive strike, when they walked into a trap laid by the heavily armed extremists. Unconfirmed reports suggest some militants may have been hit in the ensuing battle — but the damage to Kenya’s elite forces is undeniable.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen, visibly shaken, rushed to Nairobi West Hospital on Thursday, joined by Inspector General of Police Douglas Kanja, to visit the survivors. While there, Murkomen revealed that another officer — injured in Haiti during an anti-gang crackdown — was also being treated at the same facility.
“I spent Labour Day not celebrating, but comforting heroes wounded in the line of duty,” Murkomen stated. “Our officers give everything for this country — and some have paid with their lives. We mourn them. We honor them.”
The government has now launched an intense counter-operation to hunt down the attackers, with Murkomen vowing that “those responsible will face the full wrath of the state.”
This chilling assault comes just days after Al Shabaab terrorists executed five quarry workers in Mandera County on April 29 — forcing them out of their vehicle at gunpoint and slaughtering them in cold blood before fleeing into the wilderness.
As fear spreads and security forces tighten operations, the nation demands answers — and justice for the fallen heroes.
