The environmental defenders of Nairobi will begin their ecological protest on April 1, which coincides with global springtime celebrations. Activists have organized a mass procession into Karura Forest to depict the recent floods as a “man-made massacre” instead of a natural disaster. The team plans to construct a living graveyard, which will serve as a memorial for the victims of the city’s drainage system failure.
The “twisted” irony of this April 1 mobilization is its timing. The activists contend that Nairobi’s existing infrastructure system functions as a cruel joke, which resulted in multiple fatalities throughout the recent flooding events. The Silent Witnesses establishment has grown beyond its initial tree-planting phase. The saplings that people plant in Karura soil will serve as memorials for those who died in Mathare and the streets of the CBD that flooded.
The walk shows strong urgent needs that people must address. The activists moved the memorial to Karura’s protected canopy to show how the city possesses green spaces that contrast with its concrete areas that cause flooding. The organizers believe that government spending on legacy projects and Sh47 billion budgets allows citizens to handle their funeral expenses, which they must pay in the silt.
The event signifies a new direction for Kenyan activism. The movement uses biological monuments to preserve the memory of deceased individuals instead of using street protests and placards. The City Hall message sends a frightening warning because these trees will continue to grow as permanent reminders of administrative negligence, which will last beyond the floodwaters and the news coverage.
The residents of Nairobi are invited to Karura Park for the purpose of witnessing an event. The forest will transform into a historical archive that documents the city that failed to protect its most defenseless population. The activists selected April first, which people consider a day for foolishness, to request a serious evaluation of their demands.
