Enraged residents of Cianyi Kathera village in Mbeere North Sub-County, Embu County, torched the motorbike of the local Assistant Chief in a dramatic show of anger.
According to reports, the Gitiburi Assistant Chief stood by as houses were demolished on disputed land, leaving four families homeless in the early hours of Tuesday. The demolitions, allegedly led by the Siakago Police Station OCS, have been labeled illegal by the affected families, as the land dispute remains unresolved in court.
The demolitions displaced several families, triggering frustration and unrest in the community. Protesters expressed their outrage by setting fire to the Assistant Chief’s motorbike.
In response, Mbeere North Deputy County Commissioner Harisson Ndwili revealed that the sub-county security committee convened a meeting to address the crisis.
This incident adds to the rising tensions between local chiefs and residents over controversial administrative decisions. Just recently, angry villagers stormed the home of the Mavala Township Sub-location Assistant Chief, accusing him of colluding in the killing of two alleged livestock thieves. The mob retrieved the victims’ bodies from Malava Hospital and set the chief’s property ablaze.
Such escalating conflicts highlight the deepening mistrust between residents and local administrators in the region.
