Members of the National Assembly will take a one-month break after the Parliament premises were destroyed by protestors on Tuesday.

In an announcement on Wednesday, June 26, the House will be on recess from June 26 to July 23.

“Pursuant to the provisions of Standing Order 28(3) relating to the Calendar of the Assembly, and the resolutions of the House of Wednesday, 14th February 2024, and Tuesday, 25th June 2024, the Speaker notifies that, upon the rise of the House at the appointed time today, regular sittings will resume on Tuesday, 23rd July 2024 at 2:30 p.m.” read the notice.

The announcement comes after the Finance Bill 2024 sailed through Parliament on Tuesday after 195 Members of Parliament voted to pass it while 106 others rejected it. Three votes were spoiled.

The bill was then to proceed to the third reading before being forwarded to President William Ruto for assent. After the bill was passed, chaos rocked Parliament buildings as protestors gained access to the premises after overpowering security officers at the gate.

The protestors vandalised equipment inside parliament, some of which were crucial in holding sittings in the August House.

During the moment, Members of Parliament sought refuge in the basement parking of Parliament as police officers kept guard awaiting backup and evacuation.

In videos seen by nairobileo.co.ke, smoke was seen billowing from the Parliament buildings.

Several protestors were shot dead and scores others injured during the incident.
