Public Opinion on Gachagua’s Impeachment
Trends and Insights For Africa (TIFA) conducted a recent survey. The survey shows that most residents in the Mt Kenya region oppose the impeachment motion against Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua.
The poll, released on October 7, 2024, indicates that 69% of Mt Kenya residents are against the impeachment. Only 20% support it. Meanwhile, 11% stay undecided. This regional perspective starkly contrasts with the national sentiment, where opinions are more evenly split.
The survey highlights a broader division among Kenyans about Gachagua’s impeachment. 41% are in favor and 38% are opposed. This leaves 21% undecided. The support for impeachment is noticeably lower in the Mt Kenya region.
Only 28% oppose it there, compared to other areas. This suggests a strong regional loyalty towards Gachagua, reflecting the political dynamics within the country.
Supporters of the impeachment have highlighted Gachagua’s perceived bias. They point to his favoritism towards his own community as the primary reason for their stance. According to the poll, 35% of those in favor of impeachment believe that Gachagua’s rhetoric is discriminatory.
Meanwhile, 20% attribute their stance to his overall poor performance. Interestingly, a notable part of supporters (17%) did not give a specific reason for their support of the impeachment.
The TIFA poll was conducted from October 1 to October 4, 2024. It involved 1,892 respondents across various counties. This ensured a representative sample. The data collection was carried out through telephonic interviews, and the survey has a margin of error of +/- 2.25%. This comprehensive approach provides valuable insights into the political climate surrounding Gachagua’s potential impeachment.
