Three boda boda operators died on the spot after ramming into an oncoming vehicle in Kakamega.
The deceased was part of a group in a funeral convoy on the Musoli-Sigalagala on Saturday, May 11.
According to eyewitnesses, the casualties were partaking in stunts that contributed to the crash.
“They were lying on their bikes, drinking alcohol and causing all sorts of drama when they were hit,” one of the eyewitnesses said.
The trio of riders died on the spot.
Earlier, the riders had hit another woman who was seriously injured and rushed to the hospital.
The deceased were escorting the body of a young man who was killed in another accident after a police vehicle ran over him.
Troubled by the tragedy, the locals called on the authorities to subject the riders to lessons on road discipline and safety.
Roads and Transport Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen is on record pointing at the boda boda sector as the primary cause of accidents in the country.
“If we are going to sort out the accident issue, we have to sort out the boda boda sector. The leading cause of accidents right now is the boda boda industry,” said the CS during the launch of the National Road Safety Action Plan 2024-2028 at the Kenyatta International Convention Centre (KICC).
