12-Year-Old Girl Drowns in Kipsonoi River Amid Rescue Efforts

A 12-year-old girl tragically drowned on Saturday while swimming in the swollen waters of the Kipsonoi River in Bomet County.

According to witnesses, the girl was swimming with three friends when the incident occurred. Chemagel location chief, Lenny Kirui, confirmed that the accident happened around 4:00 PM.

“One girl drowned, while three others were saved by herders who responded to their cries for help,” Kirui stated.

The rescued girls received treatment at Sotik Health Centre and were later discharged.

Preliminary reports suggest the girls had gone to the river to wash their school uniforms in preparation for the upcoming school term and decided to swim, which led to the unfortunate incident.

Efforts to recover the girl’s body have been hampered by strong river currents. By midday Sunday, January 5, the body remained missing, with Bomet County divers joining the search.
