Shockwaves Across Kenya as Senator Boni Khalwale Sparks Outrage for “Toilet Reopening Ceremony” at Muliro Gardens!

In a move that has sent social media into a frenzy, Kakamega Senator Boni Khalwale has come under intense fire after sharing photos of himself proudly officiating the reopening of a public toilet. Yes, you read that right—a toilet.
The images, posted on X (formerly Twitter) to his massive following of 2 million users, show Khalwale speaking solemnly to a handful of people as he inaugurates the refurbished restroom at the historic Muliro Gardens.
In his post, he boasted:
“Leading the reopening of Muliro Gardens Ico-Toilet. We appreciate the Court of Appeal for blocking @BarasaFernandes’ attempt to take control of this facility from the Kakamega PLWD and give it to his relatives.”
While the senator’s claims remain unverified, the internet had no chill. Kenyans erupted with disbelief, mocking the politician for what many described as a pathetic display of misplaced priorities.

One outraged user wrote:
“This is what we’ve become? While other countries are closing multi-billion dollar trade deals, our leaders are out here… cutting ribbons for toilets?!”
Another sarcastically added:
“He really stood there, chest high, launching a latrine. Where are our standards?”
Others didn’t hold back:
“This was supposed to be an MCA’s moment. What kind of leadership is this?”
“Toilet openings while citizens starve? Do we even know what matters anymore?”
This isn’t the first time Kenyan leaders have been roasted online for bizarre or embarrassingly low-impact projects.
In 2020, former Nyeri Senate aspirant Ephraim Maina was ridiculed for flying in by chopper to unveil a flimsy wooden bridge worth just Sh7,800—built by locals. The dramatic entry stunned many, especially given Maina’s background as an engineer.
More recently, Rarieda MP Otiende Amollo also caught heat after he posted pictures of himself helping construct a mud hut for a childless widow. Critics slammed the gesture, arguing that with government resources at his disposal, something more dignified could’ve been done.
One furious user asked:
“If these are the leaders, what future do we even have?”
Ironically, Muliro Gardens has had its fair share of notoriety. Once the center of public shame after images of couples engaging in public indecency went viral, the garden was later designated a national monument. The government had promised to clean up its image.
But now? It seems the garden is making headlines again—for all the wrong reasons.
