In a statement that has stunned both allies and critics alike, ODM Party leader Raila Odinga has declared he has no regrets about his decision to work with President William Ruto, despite months of criticism from within the opposition.
Speaking during a closed-door briefing that quickly became public, Raila said the move to support the Kenya Kwanza government during key national decisions was a strategic choice, and one he would make again without hesitation.
“I do not regret what we did. It was necessary,” he stated firmly.
Raila defended the decision as one rooted in the country’s long-term interests, not political gain. He explained that his support was not about joining government ranks but ensuring national unity, peace, and institutional progress.
“We were at a crossroads as a country. The tension was rising, and Kenyans wanted stability. That is what informed our actions—not politics, but patriotism,” Raila explained.

However, his remarks have ignited a fierce backlash from opposition hardliners who feel betrayed by what they view as a shift toward the very government they fought to oppose. Some accuse him of abandoning the cause, while others say he has simply accepted the political reality post-2022 elections.
Raila brushed off the criticism, saying he is guided by principle, not pressure, and that history would vindicate his decisions.
“I have always done what I believed was best for the people. Time will tell who was right,” he added.
This revelation is expected to widen the rift within opposition ranks, with factions already divided between dialogue and resistance.
Political analysts say Raila’s statement could redefine the country’s political alignment ahead of the 2027 general elections.
Is This the End of the Opposition as We Know It?
With Raila signaling openness to work with a government he once opposed, questions are swirling:
- Will ODM continue as a strong opposition force?
- Has Raila’s political strategy shifted permanently?
- Is this the first public signal of a possible 2027 political realignment?
