Nairobi MCA Drops Dead Days After Threatening Governor’s Impeachment – What Really Happened?

Kariobangi North MCA Joel Munuve has tragically died under mysterious circumstances – just three days after announcing plans to collect signatures for the impeachment of Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja.

The outspoken and fiercely independent county lawmaker, known for his relentless push for accountability, collapsed while at his ward office and was rushed to a private hospital along Kiambu Road – where he was later pronounced dead on Tuesday, April 22.

Government pathologist Johansen Oduor has confirmed the cause of death as a blood clot that severely restricted oxygen supply. But the timing – just days after a bold political move – has ignited a firestorm of suspicion and speculation across the country.

Munuve had become a growing thorn in Sakaja’s side, recently questioning the governor’s controversial “Dishi na County” school feeding program and demanding the transfer of Mama Margaret Kenyatta Hospital back to the national government, citing chronic service failures. Letters had already been dispatched to President William Ruto and Head of Public Service Felix Koskei.

In a rare and dramatic move, seven pathologists and over 15 DCI forensic officers have now been tasked with conducting an expansive postmortem investigation, involving representatives from the Nairobi County Assembly, the hospital where he died, and even Embakasi East MP Babu Owino – a close ally.

Family lawyer Danstan Omari described the case as “too hot to handle” for a standard investigation. The original postmortem, scheduled for April 24, was abruptly halted following requests from detectives and stakeholders demanding broader inclusion.

Governor Sakaja, under mounting scrutiny, made a televised plea on Citizen TV:

“Let’s not politicize death,” he said, urging for calm. “Investigations are underway.”

But few are convinced. Munuve wasn’t just another MCA – he was a rare breed: an independent candidate who defied party politics, a man who fearlessly challenged corruption, and who many believed was finally gaining momentum to shake the foundations of Nairobi’s leadership.

Now, he’s gone.

And Kenya is left asking: Was this just a tragic medical event? Or is there more to this story than meets the eye?
