Interior Cabinet Secretary Kipchumba Murkomen has announced drastic new measures to bring rogue churches under government control. This follows a disturbing incident in Rongo that has drawn chilling comparisons to the infamous Shakahola massacre.
The shocking scene unfolded at St. Joseph’s Mission of Africa church on April 21, where police discovered 57 people locked up and reportedly brainwashed, refusing medical treatment after two others died under mysterious circumstances.
Despite being freed, the victims bizarrely refused to leave, camping outside the very church they were held in—forcing police to step in and detain them.
Addressing the press on Thursday morning, Murkomen revealed that a task force created by President Ruto had finalized hard-hitting proposals to rein in religious institutions suspected of extremist practices.
Led by former MP Mutava Musyimi, the task force has recommended mandatory church registration and tighter surveillance of faith-based operations across Kenya.
“These proposals are not just theoretical—they’re urgent,” Murkomen stressed. “The report is already before the cabinet committee. From there, it’s headed to Parliament.
We can’t afford another national tragedy driven by unchecked religious fanaticism.”Murkomen didn’t hold back in applauding Migori County police for what he described as averting “another Shakahola-level disaster,” praising their swift intervention that likely saved dozens of lives.
With Parliament now set to debate the sweeping reforms, the country watches closely as the government prepares to overhaul how churches operate—potentially reshaping the religious landscape of Kenya forever.
