Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has sparked a major political storm after launching a blistering verbal attack against President William Ruto and Azimio leader Raila Odinga, branding the two “hyenas” feeding on the suffering of ordinary Kenyans. Speaking during a charged diaspora meeting in the United States, Gachagua called on Kenyans to wake up and reject both leaders in the 2027 general election.
Gachagua, who served as Ruto’s running mate in the 2022 elections, accused the Head of State and his former rival of secretly forming an unholy alliance to loot and silence dissent. “Ruto and Raila are two hyenas feeding on the same carcass. Do not be deceived. They are together. They eat together. They are not different. They are the same,” Gachagua declared in front of a stunned crowd of Kenyan-Americans.
In a scathing tirade, he claimed that Raila’s silence in recent months was proof of co-option. “He’s quiet because his mouth is full,” Gachagua said, implying that Odinga had been bought off and was no longer a voice for the people. He further accused Ruto of abandoning his bottom-up economic promises, turning instead to elite deals that benefit the rich while choking ordinary hustlers.
Gachagua’s comments are being viewed as a bold declaration of political war, and a clear indication that he is preparing to position himself as a third force in the 2027 race. His strong message to the diaspora was to avoid falling into the trap of choosing between what he termed as two corrupt sides of the same coin.
“Do not let them divide you. Reject both. Kenya deserves better. We need fresh leadership that does not feed on the poor,” Gachagua insisted.
