A tragic incident occurred in Siaya County. A 32-year-old woman named Rosemary Anyango lost her life after a gold mining shaft collapsed.
It buried her alive. The incident took place in Uradi village while Rosemary was engaged in routine mining activities with four others.
Despite efforts to save her, she was trapped at the deepest end of the shaft, leading to her demise.
During the rescue try, a 20-year-old man named Brandon Omondi also sustained injuries while trying to reach Rosemary. The collapsed shaft continued to cave in, injuring Brandon’s lower limbs.
He was later treated and discharged from Siaya County referral hospital. The woman’s body was retrieved and taken to the hospital mortuary for preservation pending a postmortem examination.
The Assistant Chief, Grace Otieno, warned artisanal gold miners against operating during rainy seasons as the mining shafts become weak.
This caution comes in the wake of the tragic incident that claimed Rosemary’s life and left others injured. The community is urged to emphasize safety measures to prevent such accidents in the future.
