The audio was released by Dennis Itumbi, Head of Presidential Special Projects and Creative Economy at the State House, who criticized Kalonzo for holding President William Ruto responsible for the holdup in forming a new electoral agency.
In the recording, Kalonzo can be heard discussing the selection of Augustus Kyalo Muli, leader of the National Liberal Party, as the Azimio representative on the IEBC selection panel appointed by the Political Parties Liaison Committee.
It is well-known that Kalonzo opposed Augustus’ appointment and favored Wiper’s Koki Muli for the panel instead.
While addressing the media at the SKM Command Centre in Nairobi, Kalonzo seemed to confirm the audio’s authenticity but dismissed it as a tool for his opponents to promote their agenda.
“Perhaps I can invite you (media) and share my views on the government’s tactics of delay,” the Wiper Party leader stated. “But if I do, please do not record me and send it to Itumbi. “
He added, “People are desperate, absolutely desperate. “
When pressed for more details on the audio, Kalonzo responded, “I said Muli is one of us. He comes from my home county. I surely wish him well, but he should not be exploited as a proxy to delay a crucial national issue. “
According to the Wiper Party leader, Azimio had reached a consensus on Koki Muli, and the coalition was allotted 48 hours to submit a name for the panel.
Kalonzo insists he is not significantly involved in the delays for reconstituting the IEBC, even while a court case involving his ally Ambassador Muli continues to prolong.
In August, Augustus filed a lawsuit against Azimio la Umoja for trying to remove him from the list provided by political parties.
The petition ultimately halted the panel selection process, as conservatory orders were granted to prevent the panel’s appointment until the matter was adjudicated.
