Edung Vows IEBC Remains Free from Political Influence as 2027 Polls Loom.

Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC) Chairperson Erastus Ethekon Edung today issued a powerful declaration reinforcing the Commission’s autonomy, affirming that no individual—regardless of political stature—can compel IEBC to act unlawfully or manipulate election results.

Speaking at a media briefing, Edung insisted the Commission answers only to the Constitution, explicitly citing Article 247, which guarantees its independence. “We deal with numbers, not perceptions… nobody can order the IEBC to do what is contrary to law,” he said, signaling an unambiguous rebuke to political interference.

Edung’s emphatic assurance comes amid escalating public unease over remarks by political figures linked to the ruling coalition. MPs such as Oscar Sudi and William Kamket had raised alarm by implying they might “top up” votes to ensure electoral success—a comment widely interpreted as a threat to the integrity of upcoming elections.

Reiterating IEBC’s commitment to transparency, Edung pledged that the 2027 general elections would be executed strictly in accordance with constitutional mandates, with results driven purely by verified data, not pressure or political alignment. “We are an independent commission… not under someone’s control apart from the Constitution,” he emphasized.

This forceful message is poised to resonate across political circles, media watchdogs, and civic organizations. As Kenya heads toward a highly contested electoral season, Edung’s remarks serve as a preemptive warning: the Commission will not be swayed by rhetoric or political ambition, and its mandate remains firmly anchored in law.
