Wamalwa Blasts Government Over “State-Backed Goons” to Discredit Protests Ahead of Gen Z Memorial.

In a sharp escalation of political tension, Eugene Wamalwa, Cabinet Secretary for DAP–K, has leveled explosive accusations against President William Ruto’s administration. He claims the government is deploying state-sponsored thugs—coordinated with security forces—to undermine peaceful Gen Z protests marking the anniversary of last year’s deadly demonstrations.

Speaking at a joint press briefing with Wiper Party leader Kalonzo Musyoka, Wamalwa denounced the Communications Authority’s recent ban on live protest coverage. He alleged the move is part of a broader strategy to conceal orchestrated violence. “There is a reason why William Ruto wants this blackout… I suspect he wants to unleash the military on the citizens,” Wamalwa warned.

Wamalwa’s accusations were reinforced by human rights groups and independent media. An exposé by KTN News, cited by the Civic Freedoms Forum, details what appears to be a well-funded plan involving senior government figures, political operatives, and digital influencers to recruit and deploy goons—armed with bikes, whips, and clubs—to terrorize women and youth at protests.

The alarm was echoed by rights organizations including KHRC, ARTICLE 19 Eastern Africa, CRECO, Defenders Coalition, MUHURI, IMLU and Transparency International Kenya. They condemned the plot as “state complicity in undermining civic space” and urged independent investigations by the DPP and relevant committee chairs.

Forces Disguised in Plain Clothes

Analysts warn these covert tactics supplant formal police deployment. During June 17 demonstrations in Nairobi, protesters were reportedly attacked by motorbike-riding assailants, described by Kalonzo as “state-sponsored terrorism,” who operated in concert with security personnel.

In response to mounting public pressure, opposition figures have moved to court to compel media to resume live transmissions, stressing that without coverage, abuses may continue unchecked.

Stakes Riding High

This revelation comes as Kenya prepares for nationwide Gen Z memorial protests on June 25—marking one year since the storming of Parliament. Recall that more than 60 demonstrators were killed during those events, according to AFP. With anniversary protests expected to draw thousands, Wamalwa and civil society leaders are sounding the alarm against a repeat scenario.
