Veteran Broadcaster Sammy Lui Passes Away, Marking End of an Era in Kenyan State Ceremonies.

The Kenyan media fraternity and state functions community were shaken on Thursday afternoon with the sudden death of Sammy Lui Wang’ondu, a veteran broadcaster and former Master of Ceremonies at State House (Nairobi). His son, Chris Wang’ondu, confirmed his passing on the afternoon of 23 October 2025.

Preliminary reports indicate the corps had died at his home in Subukia, Nakuru County. The cause of death has not yet been disclosed publicly.

A Voice That Defined State Events & A Media Legacy

Sammy Lui’s career spanned decades and intersected major milestones in Kenya’s broadcasting and ceremonial history. He started his journalism career at what was then the Kenya Broadcasting Corporation (KBC) English Service and later became one of the founding anchors at the Kenya Television Network (KTN).

His signature deep voice and impeccable command of English earned him national recognition, especially during the regime of Daniel arap Moi and continuing into the presidency of Mwai Kibaki. He later served as Director of State Events at State House—presiding over national parades, presidential functions and state ceremonies that shaped Kenya’s public-face at home and abroad.

Impact and Public Sentiment

News of his death triggered an outpouring of tributes across social media and in media circles. Many recalled his commanding presence at major gatherings, from national holidays to official receptions, and described his passing as the loss of a familiar voice that had stood as part of Kenya’s institutional memory.

As one commentator put it: “His voice was among the most recognisable in government functions—clear, dignified, authoritative.” Others reflected on how his career symbolised an era when state broadcasting and ceremony were deeply intertwined.

What Happens Next

The family has yet to announce details of the funeral or memorial service. Given his past role in State Events and broadcasting, it is likely that the service will attract attendance from prominent media, government and cultural personalities.

Additionally, his death raises reflection on the era of ceremonial broadcasting in Kenya—one where the voice at the podium mattered as much as the words, and where national functions were broadcast live to a captivated country.
