A dashboard camera recording reviewed by Wamuzinews.co.ke on Saturday, February 1, revealed the chilling moments before a high-speed Probox ferrying muguka crashed head-on into a lorry at Njuri, along the busy Embu-Meru highway.
The fatal accident, which happened on Wednesday, January 29, claimed two lives instantly. A third passenger miraculously survived and was rushed to Chuka Level 5 Hospital for urgent medical attention.
The footage shows the lorry moving downhill when the Probox, speeding around a bend, suddenly loses control and slams into it. A boda boda rider nearby narrowly avoided being hit, as the truck unknowingly shielded him from the impact.
There were no other vehicles in the vicinity at the time of the collision, which occurred in broad daylight. The Probox was left mangled beyond recognition, while the lorry sustained front-end damage.
Emergency responders arrived quickly to extract the bodies from the wreckage, as traffic officers from Chuka took control of the chaotic scene, with onlookers gathering in shock.
This tragedy comes just a week after a Miraa pickup, also speeding, veered off the road along the Kitui-Kibwezi highway, killing two pedestrians near Kwa Toma in Kitui County.
Eyewitnesses reported that the pickup driver lost control before fatally striking a pastor and a businessman standing by the roadside.
Despite their reputation for maneuvering at breakneck speeds, Miraa and Muguka transport drivers continue to be involved in deadly crashes.
This worrying trend persists despite government intervention in 2021, which saw the introduction of safety stickers and the enforcement of a 100 kph speed limit for these transporters.
