Sakaja Criticised for Requesting Chapati-Making Machine from Ruto

Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja has found himself at the center of criticism after requesting a chapati-making machine from President William Ruto. The move has sparked mixed reactions, with many questioning his priorities as the leader of Kenya’s capital city.During a recent public event, Sakaja made the request, arguing that the machine would help improve food production and create employment opportunities for small-scale vendors.

However, critics, including political opponents and concerned citizens, have dismissed the request as trivial and misplaced. Many Kenyans took to social media to express their disappointment, saying Nairobi faces bigger challenges such as poor roads, inadequate water supply, and high unemployment rates. They argued that the governor should focus on long-term infrastructure projects and sustainable economic solutions instead of appealing for a chapati-making machine.“Sakaja should be lobbying for major investments in public transport, housing, and education.

A chapati machine won’t solve Nairobi’s real problems,” one social media user posted.Opposition leaders also seized the moment to attack the governor, claiming he was failing in leadership. Some accused him of engaging in populist politics rather than addressing the real issues affecting Nairobians. However, Sakaja’s supporters defended his request, saying he was thinking about small businesses and the informal sector, which play a significant role in Nairobi’s economy.

They argued that such innovations could help empower local food vendors, create jobs, and boost the city’s economy.Despite the backlash, the governor has yet to respond to the criticism directly. Whether the chapati-making machine will become a reality remains to be seen, but the debate has once again highlighted the delicate balance leaders must strike between symbolism and substance in governance.
