Ruto and Gideon Moi Seal Historic Deal as KANU Joins Broad-Based Government.

In a politically seismic move, President William Ruto and KANU leader Gideon Moi have formalized a unity agreement during a high-level meeting at Kabarak, clearing the way for KANU’s integration into a broad-based government. The agreement marks KANU’s return from opposition margins to the heart of national governance.

The deal was unveiled publicly on Friday, October 10, 2025, following intense behind-closed-doors negotiations at State House, Nairobi, where leaders laid the foundation for expanded coalition politics ahead of the 2027 elections.

What Was Agreed: Unity, Development, and New Alliances.

President Ruto justified his extended hand to Moi as a deliberate attempt to foster national cohesion and expedite key development agendas. In his address at Moi’s Kabarak home, he emphasized that the move should not be viewed as political opportunism but as strategic nation-building.

A key outcome: KANU will soon formally join the broad-based government, reclaiming a seat at the table of national governance after years of opposition. Moi, for his part, accepted the overture, saying he would shelve personal ambitions—particularly his senatorial bid in Baringo—and focus instead on contributing to national priorities.

During the visit, Ruto also announced development promises for Baringo including new major road infrastructure, a stadium in Kabarnet, and a new university to honor Daniel arap Moi’s legacy.

Political Fallout and Opposition Distress.

The pact has immediately triggered shockwaves across Kenya’s opposition landscape. For years, KANU has been a symbolic pillar of regional and historical politics; its shift into Ruto’s coalition may fracture opposition alliances, especially in Rift Valley and Ukambani strongholds.

Some analysts interpret the move as a signal that the Kenya Kwanza coalition aims to absorb key opposition players ahead of 2027, undermining dissent and consolidating power in critical regions.

Opposition figures have expressed disdain, calling the pact a betrayal of democratic competition. Several voices have accused Moi of trading his party’s identity and autonomy for fleeting influence under the ruling order.
