Roofs Blown, Electric Posts Down As Cyclone Hits Kenyan Coast [Photos]

Cyclone Ialy has hit the Kenyan coast leaving several houses destroyed and electric posts down.

In a statement on Tuesday, May 21, Kenya Red Cross strong winds were experienced in the Majajani area of Kilifi County.

Other areas affected include; Casuarina, Olimpia, Madunguni in Malindi, and Garashi in Magarini, Kilifi County.

According to the Kenya Red Cross electric posts in Jilore Trading Center caught fire during the incident.“Extremely strong winds have been reported in various coastal areas of Kenya due to Tropical Storm IALY. In the Majajani area of Kilifi County, strong winds blew off the roof of a residential house. Electric posts in Casuarina, Olimpia, Madunguni in Malindi and Garashi in Magarini, Kilifi County, fell down, while two posts in Jilore Trading Centre caught fire,” read the statement in part.

Kenya Red Cross noted no casualties have been reported so far from the cyclone and urged Kenyans living in the coastal area to take extra caution.

“No casualties have been reported so far. We continue to urge extra caution,” the organization added.

The Kenya Met Department earlier warned Kenyans in the Coast region to brace themselves for strong south-easterly winds due to the tropical storm IALY.

The weatherman advised small boats and crafts to avoid deep-sea areas.

“As a result of tropical storm IALY, expect south-easterly winds at 10-30 knots over Kenya waters. Wave heights will range from 1.5 to 3.6m. Moderate to strong sea conditions. Small boats and crafts should avoid deep-sea areas,” the Met Department warned.
