ODM Hosts Special Prayer for Raila Ahead of AU Elections

The Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) conducted a special prayer service for former Prime Minister Raila Odinga on Monday in preparation for the African Union Commission elections.

ODM’s Nairobi County leadership welcomed supporters and well-wishers to the event at the Bomas of Kenya.

Raila arrived with his wife, Ida Odinga, and several leaders, including Nairobi Governor Johnson Sakaja, Homa Bay Governor Gladys Wanga, Dagoretti North MP Beatrice Elachi, and nominated Senator Hamida Kibwana.

The Assembly of Heads of State and Government is set to elect the chairperson and deputy chairperson during their session on February 15-16, 2025.

Raila Odinga, a candidate for the AUC chairmanship, received a crozier from Bishop Simon Okwama during a special prayer at the Bomas of Kenya on February 10, 2025.

To secure his role, Raila needs the backing of two-thirds of the 55 AU member states, equating to 33 votes.

He is competing against Djibouti’s Mohamoud Youssouf and Madagascar’s Richard Randriamandrato.

If successful, he will take over from Chad’s Moussa Faki.

The election will be conducted via secret ballot, allowing heads of state and government to cast their votes.

If no candidate attains a two-thirds majority in the first round, additional rounds will occur, with later stages possibly requiring only a simple majority.
