Nyeri Governor Clarifies Misquoted Remarks on Murang’a Counterpart Amid Backlash”

Nyeri Governor Mutahi Kahiga has clarified that his comments about Murang’a Governor Irungu Kang’ata during the burial of William Nderitu, the father of Laikipia Senator John Kinyua, were misinterpreted.

On February 11, Kahiga explained that he was merely emphasizing that Kang’ata should be aware of the political landscape in the Mt Kenya region. He also commended Kang’ata for his contributions to Murang’a, urging other governors to follow his example.

“Some have misunderstood my statement regarding Irungu Kang’ata. I did not claim he has not achieved anything; he has accomplished many positive initiatives that others should replicate. My point was that we need to recognize our people’s political choices. As the Mt Kenya region, we have taken a stance, and it would be beneficial for Kang’ata to align with us,” Kahiga stated.

Kahiga cautioned that if Kang’ata does not align with former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua, he may jeopardize his re-election in 2027. He mentioned that providing porridge to the needy would not guarantee Kang’ata’s re-election, as locals would follow Gachagua’s lead.

“You may distribute porridge, but ultimately, we will follow Gachagua’s guidance,” Kahiga remarked.

His statements sparked backlash online, with many criticizing him for targeting Kang’ata, who is regarded as the top-performing governor in the nation.
