Museveni Backs Raila for AUC Chair

Museveni Endorses Raila for AUC Chair, Raises Questions on Government Support

Has RUTO withdrawn his support for RAILA’s bid for the AUC Chairmanship? MUSEVENI’s comments in Siaya raise concerns.

Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni expressed his strong belief that former Prime Minister Raila Odinga will become the next Chairperson of the African Union Commission (AUC). During the closing ceremony of the Piny Luo Cultural Festival 2024 in Siaya County yesterday, Museveni reaffirmed Uganda’s unwavering support for Raila’s candidacy for the AUC position.

He urged Raila to help African leaders galvanize support for development initiatives upon his election and stressed the importance of collaboration among regional leaders to meaningfully advance Africa.

“We’re backing Raila’s candidacy for the AUC chairmanship. He will aid us in mobilization and strategizing, but the actual power resides with us here,” Museveni stated.

However, he warned that Raila’s chances of success in the upcoming elections will heavily depend on the governmental support he garners. His comments may ignite conversations about the diminishing government backing for Raila.

“Those in power (senators, governors, MPs) can choose whether to act or not. He can talk, much like a preacher or John the Baptist,” he added.

At the same event, President William Ruto expressed optimism about Raila’s prospects, stating that Kenya remains hopeful for his success in the February elections. Ruto noted that prior to Kenya’s decision to support Raila, they sought advice from the Ugandan leader, who helped achieve consensus among other East African leaders.
