Morris Njuguna is the founder of an international shipping company, Ken Exports.
In an interview, he noted that he traveled to the United Kingdom (UK) as a postgraduate student in 2003.
Njuguna had recently graduated from the University of Nairobi with a degree in Economics and Social Studies and was about to begin his Mater’s studies at Sheffield Hallam University.
He remarked that he chose to work two jobs to finance his tuition and provide for himself.
Njuguna was able to get project-based jobs after graduation, but the Financial Crisis in 2008 left him without a steady income.
He claimed that at one point, he pondered returning to Kenya, but he had someone else to think about, in fact two more.
“I was married in 2005 and in 2006 I was expecting my first born. I couldn’t go back home, I had to start life here,” he said.
Njuguna used his savings to hire a garage in London, from which he launched his business.
He would go door-to-door collecting stuff from Kenyans who wanted to send them back home.Njuguna ran the business with his wife, and their clientele grew quickly, after which they moved to Lutton and opened a store.
Their exceptional service has earned them the favorite shipping firm for Kenyans returning items home.
Ken Export now transports containers to Kenya every Friday via Kenya Airways, the country’s primary courier.
He also offers assistance to customers who shop for things in other European countries via England.
Njuguna oversees the entire process, including purchasing, inspection, shipping and clearing.
He revealed that in business, efficiency is critical, however, noting that the firm faces hurdles, particularly Brexit.
“It has affected business because those who import goods outside the UK would now have to pay tax, which was not initially in place,” he noted.
