Majority of Kenyans Support Raila Odinga Aligning with Ruto in 2027, While Maintaining Opposition Role.

A recent survey by Trends and Insights for Africa (TIFA) reveals a significant shift in public opinion regarding former Prime Minister Raila Odinga’s political future. Conducted between August and September 2025, the poll indicates that 32% of Kenyans anticipate Odinga’s support for President William Ruto’s re-election bid in 2027. This marks a notable departure from his traditional stance as a leading opposition figure.

Despite this expectation, the survey also highlights that 23% of respondents still view Odinga as the face of the opposition, advocating for his participation in the 2027 presidential race. Additionally, 17% believe he should rejoin the opposition and support an alternative candidate, while 14% suggest he may retire from active politics altogether.

TIFA’s findings underscore a divided public perception of Odinga’s political trajectory. While a majority foresee a potential alliance with Ruto, nearly half still consider him a central figure in the opposition, either directly or indirectly. This dichotomy reflects the uncertainty surrounding his future role and the evolving dynamics within Kenya’s political landscape.

In terms of party popularity, the survey indicates that the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) leads with 16%, followed by the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) at 13%, and the Democratic Congress Party (DCP) at 9%. Support for a broad-based government is most prominent in Northern Kenya (61%), Central Rift Valley (45%), and Nyanza (34%), while regions like Mt Kenya (11%) and Lower Eastern (17%) show the least support.

The poll also reveals a significant lack of confidence in the Independent Electoral and Boundaries Commission (IEBC), with 48% of Kenyans expressing distrust due to perceived political interference and corruption. Only 18% expressed confidence in the commission ahead of the 2027 elections.

These developments suggest a pivotal moment in Kenya’s political evolution, with Raila Odinga’s potential alignment with President Ruto marking a significant shift in the nation’s political dynamics. As the 2027 elections approach, the public’s expectations and the political landscape continue to evolve, indicating a period of transformation in Kenya’s governance and political affiliations.
