Kabogo Mulls Social Media Shutdown Over Coffin Imagery Controversy

Is ICT CS William Kabogo Considering Social Media Restrictions Due to Coffin Photos?

ICT Cabinet Secretary William Kabogo is contemplating the possibility of disabling certain social media platforms to prevent users from violating others’ rights, particularly in reference to images of leaders in coffins.

During a visit to KBC, Kabogo stated that the government has the capability to shut down accounts that abuse social media. However, he emphasized that the government prefers not to take this course of action.

He specifically referenced recent incidents where individuals in Kenya used AI to create coffin images of leaders, prompting the government to advocate for stricter regulations on social media usage.

“Simply put, let’s act responsibly. We do not wish to consider shutting people down because we have the capacity to do so,” said the CS.

“I urge everyone to be responsible on social media. Instead of placing me in a coffin for display, why not communicate what you want? Why can’t we engage in a dialogue? “

Additionally, he pointed out the necessity for Kenyans to respect others’ rights while expressing themselves on social media, noting that these rights have limits.

“While we recognize freedom of expression in Kenya, it is restricted to the extent that it does not infringe upon others’ freedoms. Your freedom concludes where mine begins.
