Joseph Irungu alias Jowie has been sentenced to death over the death of businesswoman Monica Kimani.

Justice Grace Nzioka while delivering the sentence on Wednesday, March 13 said the sentence is in line with the offense of murder under section 204 of the penal code of Kenya.

“I have ordered that the first accused person before this court Joseph Kuria Irungu alias Jowie shall suffer death as provided for the offense of murder under section 204 of the penal code of Kenya and that sentence is set aside by a lawfully competent jurisdiction,” Justice Nzioka ordered.

Jowie was found guilty of the murder of Monica Kimani in a judgment delivered on February 9 with the second accused Jacque Maribe being acquitted.

Justice Nzioka noted that the murder of the late businesswoman was planned, and intended before being executed.”It was not a defensive act. It was not out of provocation. It was planned, intended, and executed,” she stated. The High Court judge also mentioned that outside the crime committed would not allow security guards to search him where he lived in Lang’ata.

“I took time to look at the character of the accused. It is the evidence from guards, that the accused person would not allow to be searched and that he would take out a gun and say that he works at State House,” Justice Nzioka remarked.

In a presentencing report, the victim’s family asked the court to consider Jowie as the main offender acting alone.

They also revealed that the murder of their kin affected them economically and her business was affected.

The probation officer in his report told the court that Jowie lacks stable partner relationships, exhibits antisocial personality, and is impartial and a thrill seeker who uses his anger to control others.
