Inferno in Isiolo: Wildfires Ravage Villages as Grazing Lands Turn to Ash – Residents Cry for Urgent Action!

Wildfires have ravaged parts of Isiolo County for over two days, with the Kenya Red Cross issuing an update on Sunday about the ongoing containment efforts. The blaze, which began in Merti Sub-County, has destroyed over ten square kilometers of grazing land, leaving herders struggling to sustain their livestock.

The fire has rapidly spread to Iresaboru, Badana, Sericho, and nearby areas, including Matarba, Korbesa, and Malkagalla, sparking fears it could reach residential homes and institutions if not brought under control.

Community elders, residents, and activists have criticized the government for its slow response to the crisis. Despite these concerns, the Kenya Red Cross reported that they have been working alongside the Kenya Wildlife Service (KWS) and local communities to battle the fires.

“For the past two days, we have been collaborating with KWS and community members to fight the wildfire in Sericho, Garbatula Sub-County,” the organization stated, adding that efforts are ongoing, with specialized equipment being mobilized to prevent further spread.

Initial attempts by locals to contain the fire using basic tools proved futile. The semi-arid region’s dry conditions, combined with strong winds, have made the situation worse, allowing the fire to spread rapidly through grasslands.

Meanwhile, the wildfires in Isiolo occur against the backdrop of similar blazes miles away in Los Angeles, California, where nearly 15,000 hectares have been burned since January 7, affecting some Kenyans living in the region.

With the fires in Isiolo threatening both livelihoods and homes, residents are calling for swift action to prevent further devastation.
