Migori County has been rocked by a spine-chilling discovery that has left residents stunned and authorities scrambling for answers. In a disturbing turn of events, two lifeless bodies have been uncovered, and 57 individuals—including children as young as five—have been rescued from what is now being described as a cult-like environment at St. Joseph Mission of Africa Church in Kochola Village.
The grisly discovery came after a dramatic operation led by Rongo Sub-county security and intelligence agents. One body, eerily draped in a white robe and partially concealed with a grey sheet, was found lying lifeless on the church floor—its face bruised, foam oozing from the mouth, painting a grim picture of possible foul play. Another corpse was located shortly after, within the church compound.
Both bodies were swiftly moved to Rosewood Mortuary, pending postmortem examinations as investigators seek to determine the exact cause of death.
But the horror didn’t end there.

As officers combed through the church grounds, they stumbled upon a group of 57 malnourished, frail individuals ranging from toddlers to the elderly—held within the premises in what appears to be extreme confinement. Some were too weak to speak. Others, according to police, appeared disoriented and spiritually entranced.
When rushed to Rongo Sub-county Hospital for urgent medical checks, the group reportedly refused treatment, broke into religious chants, and caused panic within the hospital wards. Alarmed doctors called for their removal, prompting police to relocate the group to Kamagambo Police Station for safety and further interrogation.
The dramatic rescue mission was triggered by a tip-off from a vigilant Assistant Chief of Kanyadiedo sub-location, who flagged “suspicious spiritual activities” at the church.
This deeply unsettling incident bears terrifying similarities to the infamous Shakahola massacre of 2023, where authorities uncovered mass graves and rescued scores of starving followers under the spell of controversial preacher Paul Mackenzie—who now faces 191 criminal charges alongside 30 others, following a green light from the Court of Appeal just last week.
Authorities are now probing the possibility of another religious cult operating under the guise of faith, hiding sinister practices behind closed doors. The nation watches with bated breath as investigators dig deeper into what may be Kenya’s next major religious horror story.
