A political storm is brewing in Kenya after Githunguri MP Gathoni Wamuchomba dropped a bombshell on Wednesday, exposing what she described as “stealth taxes” buried deep within the controversial 2025 Finance Bill — despite government reassurances that no new burdens will fall on ordinary citizens.
In a fiery interview on Spice FM, Wamuchomba accused the government of deliberately misleading Kenyans, warning that the bill is packed with sneaky legislative tweaks designed to quietly raise taxes and eliminate vital exemptions — all without public scrutiny.
“They’re not telling you directly that bread or medicine will be taxed,” Wamuchomba said, “but they’re amending other laws to make it easier to do exactly that. This is legislative trickery. Kenyans must read between the lines — because what you’re not being told will hurt you most.”
“Mbadi Is Not Telling the Truth”
In a scathing takedown of Cabinet Secretary John Mbadi, the MP claimed that his public assurances were nothing more than political smoke and mirrors.
“When Mbadi says sugar and bread are safe — that’s a lie,” she said bluntly. “What he’s hiding is that sugar factories will now be slapped with new taxes. And once that happens, sugar prices will skyrocket at the consumer level.”
Wamuchomba emphasized that even if consumers aren’t taxed directly, manufacturers are being squeezed — and inevitably, the public will bear the brunt of the rising costs.

‘Hustlers Under Attack’
The outspoken legislator issued a stern warning to Kenya’s informal sector — known locally as hustlers — arguing that the Finance Bill 2025 is a death sentence for small-scale traders and self-employed Kenyans.
She pointed to changes in the Tax Procedures Act that introduce complex digital invoicing rules, granting unprecedented powers to tax officials to cancel agreements and impose tough penalties — powers she says could be weaponized against struggling businesses.
“Hawkers are disappearing,” she warned. “In Mt. Kenya, where I come from, traders are fleeing to Tanzania just to survive. Business in Kenya is becoming unbearable.”
Arrest Over a Website?
In a dramatic twist, Wamuchomba cited the shocking arrest of Rose Njeri — a young woman who launched a simple website to gather public opinions on the bill — as evidence of the government’s fear of transparency.
“Why arrest her if the bill is harmless?” Wamuchomba asked. “What are they hiding? The truth is — they don’t want Kenyans to know what’s coming.”
What Kenyans Could Face If Bill Passes
Wamuchomba laid out a chilling forecast should the bill pass in its current form:
- Higher taxes on small businesses and freelancers
- Soaring prices for drugs, health products, and polythene packaging
- Increased costs in digital marketing and software licensing
- A new Digital Lending Tax — making borrowing from online loan apps even more expensive
- A 16% VAT slapped on previously exempted essential goods
“Anyone using loan apps should brace themselves. Borrowing will be more costly under this bill. It’s the poor who’ll suffer,” she declared.
‘I Won’t Be Silenced’
Despite intense political pressure to back down, Wamuchomba says she won’t stop speaking out — even if it costs her re-election.
“I’ve been offered deals to keep quiet. I’ve refused. If I lose my seat for telling the truth, so be it. At least Kenyans will know I stood for them when it mattered.”
In closing, she accused the government of running a sleek PR campaign to mask the real impacts of the bill, sending out officials like Mbadi to sugarcoat the truth.
“This is not leadership — it’s manipulation. I’ll take the heat, but Kenyans deserve the truth.”
