Governor Waiguru Urges Ruto to Create Police Squad for Femicide

Kirinyaga Governor Anne Waiguru has advocated for the establishment of a specialized police unit within the Directorate of Criminal Investigations to combat femicide in the country.

While addressing constituents in Gichugu, Kirinyaga, Waiguru highlighted that this police unit will help reduce the increasing incidence of violence against women.

The county leader stressed the necessity for a sustainable solution to tackle femicide, describing the recent cases as profoundly disturbing.

“We appreciate the president for taking steps in this regard and we also seek a long-term resolution to these challenges along with a thorough evaluation of the needs of our society. “The underlying cause of these killings must be examined to reduce incidences of femicide and gender-based violence,” Waiguru stated.

She emphasized that gender-based violence is unacceptable in society and expressed hope that the 16-day campaign against femicide, initiated by President William Ruto, will outline a decisive strategy for confronting this issue.

“Gender-based violence has no place in our society; we anticipate that during the upcoming 16 days of activism, we will receive proposals and solutions that will outline a comprehensive plan to provide lasting solutions for femicide and gender-based violence,” Waiguru elaborated.

On November 20, President William Ruto announced that the campaign titled ‘Safe Home, Safe Space’ would commence on Monday, November 25, and would be headed by women leaders within government institutions.

He clarified that these leaders will work to raise awareness about the signs of gender-based violence (GBV) and inform the public about safe spaces and resources available for assistance.
