Former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has thrown down the gauntlet, claiming that after wide consultation, Kenyans have decided he is the best man to take on President William Ruto in the 2027 race. Speaking at a high-energy rally in Ruiru, Gachagua laid out sweeping reforms he promises to deliver if he becomes the opposition flagbearer.
“People have spoken. After examining the choices, they’ve decided the remedy for the current leadership is me,” Gachagua declared to roaring supporters. He urged his followers to mobilize behind him, stressing that the time has come for change.
Gachagua outlined a bold manifesto: free education for all, restoration of state-funded health services with zero fees for maternity, and the immediate scrapping of the housing levy deducting from workers’ paychecks. He also said the government would ensure essential medicines are always stocked, especially for expectant mothers.
Despite his strong claims, Gachagua also reassured that he remains open to unity. He emphasized that if the United Opposition selects another candidate, his community should support that leader—though he’s clearly positioning himself at the top of that list.
The message comes at a critical moment. Political analysts say Gachagua’s bold stance signals increasing pressure within opposition ranks, where internal consultations and coalition negotiations are ongoing. With many eyes turning to 2027, this may be the defining moment when contenders clear the floor for one ticket or fall short in visibility.
