In a fiery and dramatic revelation that has left the nation reeling, former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua has accused the government of plotting his assassination in what he describes as a cold-blooded, state-engineered conspiracy.
Speaking to the press from his Karen residence on Monday, May 19, Gachagua claimed that highly classified intelligence revealed a plan to eliminate him the previous day, Sunday, May 18—while he was attending a church service in Gatanga, Murang’a County.
“While I was worshipping in church, I received word from credible sources that there were explicit orders to finish me—once and for all,” Gachagua declared, visibly agitated.
The shocking allegations didn’t end there. Gachagua, a former District Commissioner and once the country’s second most powerful man, stunned Kenyans with claims that the plot included the use of “biological weapons”—allegedly designed to slowly impair his brain function over a span of three months.
He further asserted that state-sponsored attackers had made several failed attempts on his life, prompting national police and intelligence units to allegedly escalate the operation. According to Gachagua, some “patriotic officers” who disagreed with the sinister plan leaked information about a scheme to plant weapons in his convoy to create grounds for arrest and criminal charges.
“They were going to place arms in my vehicles—guns, ammunition, everything—to create fake evidence, arrest me, and parade me in court like a criminal,” Gachagua alleged, warning of a dangerous trend of political targeting.
Gachagua’s close ally and lawyer, Ndegwa Njiru, confirmed that heavily armed police were dispatched to surround the former DP’s Karen and Wamunyoro homes late Sunday night, raising national anxiety and sparking online outrage. Njiru sounded the alarm in a post that went viral, cautioning that Gachagua’s life was under immediate threat.
In a chilling twist, Gachagua claimed he had to alter his route home to evade ambush, as security officers allegedly planned to disarm his bodyguards, leaving him vulnerable to attacks.
The former Deputy President’s claims come amid growing political tensions after he made provocative statements warning of electoral chaos if the 2027 elections were not free and fair. Critics accused him of incitement, but Gachagua stood his ground, stating his comments were grounded in Kenya’s painful electoral history, including the bloodshed of 1992, 1997, and 2007.
“That was not incitement—it was a wake-up call to the IEBC,” he said. “We’ve seen where rigged elections can lead us.”
As of now, there has been no official response from President William Ruto or state security agencies. But with Gachagua’s accusations now in the public domain, the pressure is mounting, and the political temperature in Kenya has skyrocketed.
